Amphibious Energy has developed a transportable EnergyPod that provides renewable energy for offshore platforms. This durable product can operate under harsh environmental conditions.

The EnergyPod consists of a unique wind turbine. This turbine generates energy which is stored into a series of battery packs via an inverter. Electricity is then distributed from the battery packs to any onboard system. The EnergyPod can also be connected to a diesel generator when additional power is required.

In addition to the standard EnergyPod with a single wind turbine, Amphibious Energy can also design and deliver larger and more advanced models if the required power or energy storage is higher. This includes a larger EnergyPod (20 or 40 feet), called the Twin Head EnergyPod, which can fit 2-4 wind turbines and multiple battery packs. The Twin Head EnergyPod will produce 2-4 times more energy than the standard EnergyPod.

THE ENERGYPOD IN ACTION

Wind turbine

The patented wind turbine, which can be fitted with a 3kW or 5kW permanent magnetic generator (PMG), has a double layered housing. It sits in a free rotational frame, which turns itself towards the prevailing wind.

The turbine has an innovative design due to the construction of the blades. Where most small wind turbines use propeller blades, Amphibious Energy’s wind turbine is manufactured with large, light weight rotor blades. These special blades require far less rotation to generate energy than propeller blades. Not only does this result in diminished noise (<40dB), it also causes less rotational friction which extends the turbine’s life time.

Energy Management System (EMS)

The key operational and safety control system for the EnergyPod is the EMS. Using sensors, this unique system continuously measures and adapts the performance of the EnergyPod for optimal power creation and delivery. These sensors measure the rotational speed of the wind turbine, the wind speed, the load on the generator and batteries, and the functioning of the redundant brake system.

The EMS monitors and controls the batteries’ state of charge to extend their life time. It also allows the operator to monitor and control the EnergyPod remotely via satellite or radio signal. Each EMS is operator configurable. As soon as the EMS detects anomalies, the wind turbine will come to a standstill. If there is a fault, it will be reported to the operator’s via the remote observational system.

Brake System

Amphibious Energy has designed a unique dual hydraulic redundant brake system. Both brakes can hold a force of 620Nm, stopping the turbine in wind speeds exceeding 40m/s (>90mph). This prevents the generator from overheating.

The EMS automatically initiates these brakes during storms, emergencies and when batteries are fully loaded. Once the wind speed drops, the brake is automatically released and the wind turbine will continue to work as normal.

Maintenance

Maintenance intervals for the EnergyPod is every two years. Alternatively, this service can be paired with the operators’ platform service intervals. Major part replacements are normally scheduled every 5 years.

Performance

The beauty as well as challenge of any renewable power unit is to be dependent on natural elements for optimal energy delivery.

Amphibious Energy has designed the standard EnergyPod to come with a dual 24 2V 900Ah (86kW), PowerSafe SBS EON battery pack, which holds charge for 12 windless days (for a continuous load user). For the larger Twin Head EnergyPods four 24 2V 900Ah (172kW) battery packs will be included.

The EnergyPod can be configured for two types of load deliveries; continuous load and/or peak load, either in AC and/or DC. All performance data have been calibrated and tested onshore and offshore the Southern North Sea.

Yield example for the offshore EnergyPod (between 4 – 20m/s windspeed average):

  • 55 – 3200 W (continuous load minimum)
  • 1 – 28 MWh (average annual power delivery)
  • 1 – 40 kW (peak load, for 1 hour per 24 hour recharge cycle)

Yield example for the offshore Twin Head EnergyPod (between 4 – 20m/s windspeed average):

  • 126 – 6300 W (continuous load minimum)
  • 2 – 55 MWh (average annual power delivery)
  • 2.2 – 78 kW (peak load, for 1 hour per 24 hour recharge cycle)
